Where the waterfalls are in Arkansas

Arkansas's waterfalls are in the Ozark and Ouachita mountains, where streams drop over ledges of sandstone and limestone. Many are wet-weather falls: they run for days after a rain and are dry rock the rest of the time. The Buffalo National River and the Ozark National Forest have the greatest concentration.

Several of the best falls are at the end of rough, steep trails or dirt roads, so a high-clearance vehicle and a detailed map help.

Well-known waterfalls in Arkansas

Hemmed-In Hollow Falls

About 209 feet, in the Buffalo National River wilderness, often called the tallest waterfall between the Appalachians and the Rockies. The trail in is short but very steep on the way back. Falls near Hemmed-In Hollow Falls.

Cedar Falls

A 95-foot fall in a box canyon at Petit Jean State Park, reached by a trail that drops into the canyon. Falls near Cedar Falls.

Eden Falls
